Our Mission, Goals and Guiding Principles
Mission
To provide consulting services to UNWTO Member States on request on issues of biodiversity-based tourism, of participatory tourism planning and connecting biodiversity tourism to countries’ overall economic development - building on technical capacity, lessons learnt accumulated experiences and established networks.
Goals
To promote tourism development that supports biodiversity conservation, social welfare and economic security in the host countries and communities.
Guiding principles in the work of the UNWTO Consulting Unit
- Broad participation and involvement of stakeholders in planning and implementing sustainable tourism development and management

Harmonization of biodiversity conservation with tourism development through cross-sectored cooperation and exchange of knowledge on all levels

Enhancement of institutional and human capacities for an effective tourism management through target group specific workshops and trainings

Strengthening of an enabling environment for tourism planning and biodiversity conservation through coaching and supporting existing structures and personnel through the elaboration of tourism management plans for the model sites
