Applying the Guidelines on Biological Diversity and Tourism Development

Based on the principles of sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity with its ecosystem services, the goal of the UNWTO Consulting Unit is to provide member states with guidance on how to make tourism and biodiversity mutually supportive by using the framework of the Guidelines on Biological Diversity and Tourism Development, which were adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2004, for achievement of this goal.

The guidelines are relevant for tourism and biological diversity in all geographical locations and tourist destinations. They are understood as a dynamic tool and their development and further refinement as a continuous process. In this respect, the UNWTO Consulting Unit is cooperating with the CBD Secretariat in varied ways, including the exchange of experiences, case studies and the contributing to new supportive material connected with the guidelines.

The UNWTO Consulting Unit integrates the guidelines within the ground work for all its projects, transferring its principles, mechanisms and tools to all stakeholders involved in tourism development and biodiversity conservation.
